Vladimir Veličković was born in Belgrade,
Yugoslavia on August 11, 1935 and
died on August 29, 2019 in Split Croatia.
“The most important thing in my painting is the human figure, the man lost in an imaginary space, he is often surrounded by animals. My bestiary consists of dogs, rats, some birds of prey, rather aggressive, violent beasts. My drawings, my paintings, even some sculptures have never been “a pleasure for the eyes”, the comment that has accompanied me since my beginnings. What I do says the world, I hope, that surrounds us. It is a form of resistance. The dog was present in my drawings and paintings from the beginning. Their movements, they are only bones and muscles, bear witness to what seems to me the most vital energy, that which consists of rushing into the time which devours us. It was the series “Variation on the theme of self-portrait”. The crow is a scavenger, it is not in flight, don't believe it, nor at rest, it will take action. Black as the destiny he promises to his prey. The rat, the last of the survivors. Aggressive, inhabitant of dark underworlds.
“Experience” is the title of several drawings and paintings, he is in the middle of the instruments, serving as a guinea pig, for research but also in other “roles” when he is not attacked (the “Aggressions”). As for the original wound that led me to these “choices”, that of the torment of men who flee to nowhere – it grounds me. But I cannot take comfort from the fact that the violence that is attributed to my images has nothing to do with the more terrible violence that man inflicts on man.”
