Biography

Through his sculptures, Cárdenas established himself as one of the pioneers of modern sculpture, alongside major figures such as Hans Arp and Constantin Brancusi.

Agustín Cárdenas (1927-2001), a Cuban artist, skillfully merged abstraction and figuration in his work, marking the history of art with his visual explorations. After four years at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro, he held his first exhibition in Havana and met the young painter Jorge Camacho with whom he formed a long friendship. Then, he moved to Paris in 1955, to the center of the artistic effervescence of the Montparnasse district. It was there that he attracted the attention of André Breton, who, charmed by the spiritual and poetic dimension of his creations, integrated him into the surrealist movement.
Through his sculptures, Cárdenas established himself as one of the pioneers of modern sculpture, alongside major figures such as Hans Arp and Constantin Brancusi. He begins by creating smooth, elongated shapes by carving directly into wood, before evolving towards abstract figures inspired by his Afro-Cuban heritage and the mystical traditions of his family.
